Nicolas Miller, CFA

What are some of your career highlights so far?
During my 20 year career there have been some very special times. At UBS Warburg in London, I learned how an investment bank functions.

At HSBC-CCF in Paris, I learned origination, primary, secondary trading and syndication of new bond issuance.

Another time, at Natixis-AM I discovered the process for making investment decisions on equity indices, bonds and foreign exchange across jurisdictions. This lead me to my last role at RBNZ on Foreign Reserves Management where I had the opportunity of updating the Strategic Asset Allocation using the Bank of International Settlement software called BAAM, modernizing the execution process with the Treasury Unit Support team and building a successful track record in providing strategic, tactical, opportunistic and short term trade recommendations.

What do you like most about your job/industry?
The finance industry is dynamic due to constant changes in technology, regulation, customer preferences. There are many opportunities to learn and improve.

Most recently I successfully completed the IMF/ BIS Supervision and Regulatory Online course to complement a six month secondment. I also passed the CFA ESG investing certificate.  Next, I want to improve on my Big Data Quantitative skills.

What are your interests outside work?
I like to exercise by running, swimming, playing tennis or soccer, surfing.  Some nights when the sky is clear I like to walk and look at the stars.

Can you recommend some good reading and/or viewing?
The novels After Lives and Gravel Heart by Abdulrazakh Gurnah are among my recent favourites.

The french movie “Les Miserables” by Ladj Ly touched on some difficult topics like equal opportunities, work life balance, immigration and integration.

Make a prediction for 2027
After studying the CFA Certificate in ESG Investing, I believe Climate Change will have a significant impact on the Finance Industry: banks, asset managers and insurance companies among others. A portfolio resilient to climate change will greatly outperform by 2027.
