Emma Beale, CFA

Senior Risk Analyst
The Treasury – New Zealand

Profile September 2019

What are some of your career highlights so far?
I’ve had an extremely varied career, working in roles ranging from Settlements to Group Treasurer, and most roles in between. I’ve even had a stint as a Treasury Accountant.

Some of the highlights have been:
– Setting up an entire risk metrics and reporting for the Global Arbitrage Trading book at BP London.
– Setting up a new Treasury department from scratch including writing all Treasury Policies for Datacom.
– Arranging for the repayment of a $150m MTN, two days after the Kaikoura earthquake, using only a cell phone as our office was shut.
– Creating a new suite of non-financial reporting metrics for the entire tertiary sector for the last 10 years to the Tertiary Education Commission.
– And of course, passing my all CFA exams on the first go!

And now I’ve joined Treasury as a Senior Risk analyst in Capital Markets. I’m looking forward to learning more about the wonderful world of Financial Markets.

What do you like most about your job/industry?
Being on top of global news, and digging deep into the drivers of market movements. I’m also a real people person so I really enjoy getting out and hearing others’ opinions. There’s a lovely close group of financial markets people in Wellington so it’s always great to catch up and hear what’s been happening.

What are your interests outside work?
In my spare time I produce operas. Our company has had critically acclaimed products of The Marriage of Figaro, Madam Butterfly, and most recently Rigoletto.

It certainly keeps me busy. I also love cooking and friends and family. Oh – and this weekend I’m getting married!

Make a prediction for 2024
Hopefully the end of divisive politics of the likes of Trump and Boris. It would be great for leaders to build economies that work for everyone, not just for the super rich.
