Global from Day 1, Fund 3 Partner, John Kells, CFA, will give his insights on technology:

• The current nature of this dynamic and ever-changing tech sector; including what has been accelerated by covid.

• Trends such as ARVR, gaming, health, deep tech.

• Examples of early-stage New Zealand innovations with a global vision.

The presentation from Colin Jacobs, General Manager, Drylandcarbon, will include:

• The growing demand; why there will always be carbon emissions in our environment and a cost to emit.

• Why being carbon neutral (or better) is becoming a way to preserve a social license to operate.

• The carbon credits bell curve; which stage we are at and implications for investors.

Colin Jacobs, General Manager, Drylandcarbon

Colin is responsible for the day-to-day oversight and management of Drylandcarbon, a Kiwi carbon forestry operation designed to help New Zealand meet its climate change commitments through forestry on land where trees are the best use of land.

Colin joined Drylandcarbon in 2019 and having previously spent seven years leading teams across the energy and logistics sectors in New Zealand and the UK. These roles included providing governance and financial leadership on sale and purchase transactions to boost enterprise returns.

Colin has an Honours degree in Accountancy from the University of Glasgow.

John Kells, CFA, Partner, Global from Day One (GD1) Fund 3

John spent fourteen years in the UK, initially as an equity analyst for GLG Partners. In 2012 he was selected in the Financial News Top 40 Under 40 Rising Stars of Hedge Funds.

He then worked as Alternatives Investment Manager for Tesco Pension Investment, managing £1.5B of investments in global venture capital and private equity allocations and co-investments, as well as hedge funds.

John had a particular focus on and passion for venture capital. He joined GD1 in 2017 and is now Partner for Fund 3.

He holds a BSc (Mathematics), Diplomas in Finance, Financial Planning and Statistics and is a CFA charterholder.

Rebecca Knott, Head of Renewable Development, Meridian Energy

At Meridian Energy Rebecca leads a team investigating grid scale wind, solar and battery developments. Prior to this role, Rebecca was the founding General Manager of Dam Safety Intelligence.

She is a Civil Engineer, with a Masters from the London School of Economics in 2007-8 (during the global financial crisis), where her research included the political economy, global public policy on large dam construction and multi-stakeholder processes regarding global standards for large dam construction.

She started her career at ECNZ prior to the creation of the competitive electricity market. She was a volunteer Aid worker in Guatemala and project managed a collaboration on ‘end-to-end’ river basin dam safety in Vietnam from 2012-2015.

Erin Moriarty (moderator), Head of Finance, Sharesies

Erin is the Head of Finance at Sharesies. She began her career at Deloitte on completion of her Accounting and Commercial Law degree at Victoria University.

After spending five years at Trade Me in a number of finance and commercial roles she joined Sharesies early last year and leads a team tasked with managing Sharesies’ finance operations, business planning and investor relations.
